HOCHTIEF has been commissioned to modernise and expand the power transmission network in Greater London as part of National Grid's "North West London Upgrade" programme. The project is being implemented by the HOCHTIEF-Murphy Joint Venture (HMJV) in cooperation with other project partners.
This infrastructure project is crucial for securing the energy supply, which is considered essential for economic growth in North West London. The comprehensive expansion and modernisation of the grid infrastructure are intended to enable the connection of new data centres and ensure a stable power supply for private households, businesses, and the digital economy. Peter Hingott, CEO of HOCHTIEF Infrastructure, emphasised the importance of this contribution to the power supply.
Scope of measures and strategic importance
The contract includes the installation of new cable infrastructure over a distance of 60 kilometres. Furthermore, comprehensive modernisations and extensions to existing substations are planned. Another component of the project is the replacement of overhead lines. In addition, the project involves extensive work on one of the longest high-voltage cable tunnels in the UK, which underscores the technical complexity and scope of the commitment.
With this new mandate, HOCHTIEF builds on previous involvement. The company was already actively involved in the National Grid programme "London Power Tunnels 2". This continuous collaboration and repeated engagement in critical infrastructure projects strengthen the group's position in the strategically important growth segments of energy transmission and sustainable infrastructure development. The expansion of energy infrastructure in urban centres such as London represents a fundamental prerequisite for further urban development.
