oug Brien's athletic background wasn't in football; he was a standout soccer player who led De La Salle High School to a 1989 section championship as captain. It wasn't until his senior year that he took up football, following his father's advice to play for Coach Bob Ladouceur, whose team would later be immortalized in the film "When the Game Stands Tall" and achieve an unprecedented winning streak. As a walk-on at the University of California, Brien spent two years on the bench behind an All-American kicker.
