Affordable Housing Initiative Could Supplant Walnut Creek Apartments

Walnut Creek site with existing apartments will host dozens of new affordable homes.

A
t 150‑170 Sierra Drive, Walnut Creek, a 1.4‑acre parcel owned by Berkeley‑based Satellite Housing Associates will be replaced by an 87‑unit, 100 % affordable complex, replacing the current 29‑unit Sierra Garden Apartments. The plan, shown in concept drawings by David Baker Architects, calls for demolition of the existing building and the addition of two open‑space areas, including a patio, resident garden, tot lot, and the existing pool. Satellite seeks expedited review under state statutes and requests waivers for height, setbacks, and parking. A timeline is pending as the project moves through city review. Meanwhile, another proposal at 1271–1275 South California Blvd. envisions a 112‑unit, five‑story apartment tower to replace a miniature‑golf course in downtown Walnut Creek.
