25-year-old Australian CEO, Kyle Hunt, was left stunned after being rejected from a rental property due to his age and marital status. The real estate agent claimed he was "too young" and "single", despite having well-paying jobs and being mature for his age.
Hunt had been searching for an apartment in Melbourne for three months when he spotted the perfect listing. He arranged a private viewing, but the agent's demeanor changed from friendly to standoffish during the inspection. The agent didn't show him individual rooms and asked if Hunt had a partner at the end of the tour, responding with "oh" after being told no.
When Hunt inquired about the furniture included in the property, he was told it wasn't part of his job. He requested application forms, but the agent refused to send them, citing that he shouldn't have shown him the property due to his age and marital status. The agency allegedly blacklisted Hunt, telling another real estate agent that they couldn't offer him any properties.
The Tenant's Union emphasizes that it is unlawful for landlords and agents to discriminate against renters based on factors like age, marital status, or disability. After being rejected from this property, Hunt estimated it took him an additional three months to find a new apartment through another agent. Viewers of his TikTok story sympathized with his experience, with some joking that the ordeal could have been worse if he had a pet.
