fter converting a significant portion of its main location to serve Ford Pro Elite customers, Phil Long Collision Center refocused on specialized services in two smaller spaces. This strategic move contributed to the shop's "epic" 2024 revenue, with average monthly sales reaching $1.1 million.
Co-owner and general manager Duane Meszler credits a series of changes for the shop's success. The Colorado Springs-based collision repair operation serves the dealership group's 20+ locations in the state. Initially, it operated out of 52,000 square feet but was using only its bays inefficiently. Ford Motor Co.'s request to convert space into a mechanical service center for commercial fleet accounts took up 68% of the main site.
The shop now operates in three locations within three miles of each other, with the original site handling collision work and two smaller spaces dedicated to specialized services. The second location focuses on ADAS calibration and PDR work, while the third is still deciding its purpose but has potential for high-end or EV-focused repairs.
Meszler acknowledges that the changes were initially a headache but forced him to become more efficient. He's now eyeing expansion into Denver and sees opportunities for growth across the three sites. The focus isn't on space per se, but sales dollars – with recent monthly averages dipping to $800,000 due to industry slowdowns.
Meszler emphasizes the importance of looking internally to maximize efficiency before considering additional resources like more technicians or equipment. He's implemented measures such as I-CAR blueprinting classes and vendor consultations to optimize repair planning.
