T
he Ugly Truth About Real Estate Commissions
As Realtors, Sarah and I have spent our careers eliminating the "ugly" from homes - ugly paint, wallpaper, carpets, lighting, bathrooms, and yards. But in the highly competitive Bay Area real estate market, there are some aspects of the business that remain unattractive.
The recent change in NAR rules regarding commission bifurcations has led to desperate agents undercutting their colleagues, creating a race to the bottom. Sellers may think paying less for the same service makes sense, but they're not getting the same level of expertise and experience.
When it comes to transacting your most valuable asset, why gamble on a discount broker? Each Realtor brings unique abilities and experience to the table, making a significant difference in the sale process. From signing a listing agreement to transferring the deed, every step is critical to success or failure.
If you believe your house has a finite value, hire the cheapest agent you can find. But if you want top-dollar, don't settle for inexperience. With 35+ years of combined experience, Sarah and I are worth more because we know more and bring more to the process.
Commissions are negotiable by law, but don't be surprised if we hold steady to our value. We've earned our stripes and believe we earn our fees. While you may find someone else for less, can you find another team that offers more?
The ugly truth is, you get what you pay for in service industries. When it comes to Realtors, experience matters. Don't gamble on a discount broker - choose the best in the business.
