Billionaire Ken Griffin sells $11M Chicago penthouse amidst citywide asset sale

Billionaire Ken Griffin sells Gold Coast condo for $11 million, marking further exit from Chicago's real estate market.

B
illionaire Ken Griffin has found a buyer for his Gold Coast condo, which he listed for $11 million earlier this summer. The sale marks another step in Griffin's gradual exit from Chicago's real estate market as he relocates to Miami with his hedge fund Citadel. The 38th-floor penthouse at 9 West Walton is under contract but the buyer remains anonymous.

The property boasts two terraces, expansive windows, and access to a private rooftop pool and interior space on the 39th floor. Griffin's real estate agents, Nancy Tassone of Jameson Sotheby's International Real Estate and Emily Sachs Wong of @properties Christie's International Real Estate, co-listed the condo.

Griffin made headlines in 2017 with his record-breaking $58.75 million purchase of four floors at 9 West Walton, but never occupied the space. He has been selling off his high-end Chicago condos, including a penthouse on the 67th floor of Park Tower for $11.2 million and another unit to filmmaker George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson.

Chicago's luxury market is experiencing mixed results, with record-breaking sales in some areas but price cuts and inventory shortages elsewhere. Griffin's sale is part of a larger trend as he continues to divest from Chicago's real estate scene.
