M
arciano Sanchez, a fugitive wanted for an attempted murder in 2010, has been captured in New York City after nearly 14 years on the run. Authorities announced Thursday that Sanchez, 40, was apprehended by the New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit and the U.S. Marshals Service Regional Fugitive Task Force on October 2.
Sanchez is being held at Rikers Island awaiting extradition to Ocean County, where he faces charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. The charges stem from a November 2010 incident in which a man was shot in the face at the Community First Aid Building in Brick Township.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer praised law enforcement agencies for their efforts, saying Sanchez will "face justice" after years on the run. New Jersey State Police Superintendent Patrick J. Callahan emphasized the importance of collaboration in capturing fugitives, stating that no matter how long it takes or how far they flee, authorities will bring them to justice.
The apprehension was a joint effort by local, state, and federal agencies, including the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Major Crime Unit, Brick Township Police Department, New Jersey State Police, and the U.S. Marshals Service. Sanchez is expected to be extradited to New Jersey in the coming days to face charges related to the 2010 shooting.
