Catskills Gilded Age Estate Sells for $1.85M

Renovated residence with 9 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and 5 fireplaces on 3.7 acres overlooking the Hudson.

A
stunning Gilded Age mansion, built for a New York Supreme Court judge in 1887, is on the market for $1.85 million in the Catskills. The property boasts an array of intact old-world details and breathtaking views of the Hudson River and surrounding mountains.

The nine-bedroom estate, located at 25 Prospect Ave. in the East Side Historic District, was constructed for Justice Emory Chase, who served from 1896 to 1920. It has been owned by only a handful of families since its inception, including Roger Van Winkle, president of Columbia-Greene County Community College, who hosted notable guests like President Gerald Ford and Apollo 13 Commander James Lovell.

The current owners, Justin Lance and Vasuki Wilson, co-founders of Rise Public Strategies, purchased the home in 2020 for $675,000. They undertook a comprehensive renovation, restoring original details such as hand-carved woodwork, plaster crown moldings, and wide-plank wood floors. The property features five fireplaces, a modern chef's kitchen with massive windows, and a large backyard perfect for entertaining.

Additional highlights include an original wall of built-in bookcases in the library/home office, a double-wide parlor where the original owner held his daughter's wedding reception, and a covered wrap porch in the front. The sale also includes a portrait of the original owner and other historic memorabilia.
