enver’s historic El Jebel Shrine at 1770 Sherman St. will go to auction. Judge A. Bruce Jones approved a receiver’s plan last week, listing the building and its adjacent lot on Crexi. Built in 1906 by the Shriners, the structure is a city landmark protected by a conservation easement held by nonprofit Historic Denver.
Since 2016 the property has been owned by LLCs run by California attorney Robert Lubin, who paid $12.4 million. Lubin said the purchase was financed by EB‑5 investors. The building entered foreclosure in spring 2024; Cordes & Co. was named receiver at a lender’s request. In July, the receiver informed Judge Jones that the property must be sold because of unpaid property taxes dating back to 2022 and because Historic Denver demands deferred maintenance be addressed. The receiver has no funds to cover these costs.
Lubin’s attorneys opposed the auction, requesting a month‑long settlement period with Fairbridge Strategic Capital, the lender that provided $8.1 million in January 2023. After no settlement emerged, the receiver approved the sale on September 19. Rick Egitto of CRE Solutions is marketing the property, but an auction date has not yet been set.
Non Plus Ultra currently leases the Shrine for events, yet the building’s elevator limits use. The company also sued Denver over a denied liquor license. The south parking lot has attracted developers for two decades, including Donald Trump, but no construction has begun.
