T
he late Mica Ertegun's double-townhouse residence on East 81st Street has sold for $9.3 million, with the proceeds going to her charity. The property, which was asking $12.9 million, features a five-story, five-bedroom home with a charming spiral staircase and eclectic interior design style.
Mica, a renowned interior designer who fled Romania after the Communist takeover, passed away in December at 97. Her husband Ahmet, co-founder of Atlantic Records, died in 2006 at 83 following a brain injury. The couple hosted lavish parties in their home, which was one of several residences they owned around the world.
The sale comes ahead of an upcoming auction of Mica's jewelry and art collection, including a René Magritte painting estimated to fetch over $95 million. The couple's marriage was marked by Ahmet's high-profile love affairs, but Mica reportedly didn't mind, saying she knew she was the best thing in his life.
The 37-foot-wide home, built in 1899, features 20 rooms and a separate commercial office unit on the ground floor. While neither townhouse is landmarked, they remain on two separate tax lots despite being conjoined at the third and fourth floors. The listing brokers were Leslie J. Garfield's Lydia Rosengarten and Jed Garfield, along with Douglas Elliman's Lauren Muss.
