Fire Island's iconic gay community faces upheaval with new development plans.

Tycoon Tristan Schukraft acquires 75% of Fire Island Pines commercial district.

F
ire Island Pines, a historic gay community on the edge of a barrier island, has been a summer haven for decades. But this year's season is shaping up to be different as Tristan Schukraft, a hospitality entrepreneur, takes over 75% of the commercial district in a $17 million deal.

Schukraft, known for revamping LGBTQ venues like the Abbey in LA and launching Tryst Puerto Vallarta, plans significant upgrades to the island's central facilities. His vision includes new bars, clubs, a gym, and a boutique hotel called the Tryst, which will replace the dilapidated Botel building. The hotel will feature a refreshed pool deck and a spa.

The Blue Whale, a historic nightspot that helped launch the Tea Dance phenomenon in 1966, is also set for a makeover. Schukraft plans to tear it down and rebuild it to two levels, preserving its iconic tile floor. The Pavilion, another bar and club on the island, will be renovated to resemble its original 1950s design.

Locals and longtime visitors are largely excited about the revitalization, seeing it as fresh energy for a cherished cultural hub. However, there are concerns about rising costs and potential cultural shifts. Some worry that the influx of money and development could alter the island's unique vibe and make it less accessible to those who can't afford it.

Schukraft aims to address these concerns by making the Pines more inclusive and accessible to all. He plans to open up Fire Island to a broader and more diverse queer community, preserving its historical significance while modernizing its infrastructure. As one local noted, "Overall people are cautious, but things are looking good."
