Former NYC Home of Late Senator Jacob Javits Lists for $5.99M

Sutton Place duplex, once home to Sen. Jacob K. Javits and wife Marion, lists for $5.99 million.

T
he former New York City duplex of the late Senator Jacob K. Javits and his wife Marion has returned to the market with an asking price of $5.99 million, after a series of price adjustments.

Located at 322 E. 57th St., this elegant co-op in Sutton Place was originally listed for $7.2 million in September 2022, before being reduced to $6.49 million in September 2023 and finally settling on its current price the following month.

Designed by renowned Art Deco architect Joseph Urban in 1933, the 3,300-square-foot residence boasts four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with notable features such as an expansive great room with 18-foot ceilings and a restored woodburning fireplace. The current owner, Dorothy Berwin, purchased the duplex for $4.4 million in 2018 and has since transformed it into a modern oasis while preserving its historic Art Deco elements.

Berwin's renovations included blending modern amenities with original details under the guidance of Sandra Arndt from Studio AKTE. The space now features a stylish media room that was once Javits' cigar room, as well as an open dining area and windowed kitchen on the upper level.

The building itself is steeped in history, having hosted celebrities like Orson Welles and Clay Felker, along with artist Tamara de Lempicka and Ambassador Georgette Mosbacher. The 22-story structure with a neo-classical limestone facade houses only 20 units, adding to its exclusivity.

Noble Black and Erik Ternon of Douglas Elliman hold the listing for this unique piece of New York history.
