ambridgeSeven marked the start of construction for the Roux Institute at Northeastern University's new campus in Portland, Maine, following a recent groundbreaking ceremony. As lead architect, CambridgeSeven has collaborated closely with founders David and Barbara Roux, academic partner Northeastern University, and consultants to bring their vision of a dynamic academic building and revitalized waterfront site to life.

The $500 million project is expected to be completed by late 2027. "We're thrilled to design and build the Roux Institute at Northeastern University in Portland," said Timothy Mansfield, AIA, CambridgeSeven's Principal-in-Charge. "Our bold design reflects Maine's rich architectural heritage while manifesting the Rouxs' vision of an innovation economy that will thrive for generations."

At the heart of the campus is the 245,000 sq. ft. Alfond Center, dedicated to learning, research, and collaboration. The Center features innovative educational programs in digital engineering, computer sciences, artificial intelligence, life sciences, and medicine. The Roux Institute will conduct research, support start-ups, and partner with organizations to develop workforce talent and offer post-graduate degree programs.

The building's design combines a forward-looking vision with an industrial aesthetic, incorporating materials like granite, brick, copper, wood, and glass. Inspired by Maine's Bailey Island Bridge, the Alfond Center features a sweeping curvilinear form that extends around the peninsula and rises dramatically to reveal The Portal, a central gathering space with views of Casco Bay.

The building's sustainable design supports the vision of the Rouxs and Northeastern University, creating an innovative research hub that educates local talent for the digital and life sciences sectors. Features include a climate-adaptive façade, geothermal wells, and a rooftop garden.

The campus also includes the 58,000 sq. ft. "Bean" building, which will undergo rehabilitation to support innovation and entrepreneurship. The project also features a new parking garage, childcare center, public green spaces, pedestrian paths, and a publicly accessible pier on Casco Bay.
