Hamptons Horror: Canine Casualty in Chaotic Real Estate Deal

A Hamptons real estate deal nearly fell apart due to a dog's death.

I
rented a summer house on Cove Hollow Road in East Hampton for $279.51. If you have one to share, contact me and I'll feature it here.

For six months, I tried to sell a mansion on Further Lane owned by an elderly couple. The wife was eager to sell, but the husband was hesitant. Finally, after numerous open houses and promotions, I received an offer 5% below asking price. Contracts were drawn up, and handshakes were made, but my seller still wouldn't sign. He claimed he couldn't do it, so I agreed to bring the contract over on Thursday at 1 p.m.

When I arrived, he was sitting in the dark living room with his elderly golden retriever by his side. The dog suddenly fell over and died, prompting my seller to get down on his hands and knees to examine him. He declared it an omen and refused to sign. I suggested that the real omen was that it was time to move on, and offered to help him with his dog. Eventually, he signed the contract.

The sale will go through, and new owners will take over the mansion on Further Lane.
