ore homebuyers are weighing Thanksgiving when choosing a new house. A Realtor.com survey found that 52 % of U.S. adults say the ability to host the holiday influences their search. Among age groups, 60 % of Gen Z and millennials, 47 % of Gen X, and 30 % of Baby Boomers cited Thanksgiving entertainment as a factor. The majority—over 90 %—identified a spacious family room and a large kitchen as the most important attributes for hosting guests, while only about 12 % considered chef‑style features such as double ovens essential. Extra bedrooms and bathrooms are less critical; roughly half of respondents would prefer a spare bedroom, and 45 % would like an additional bathroom. Bathroom needs also vary with household size: one‑ or two‑person households favor two bathrooms, whereas families of three or more seek three.
Realtor.com ranked the top features that boost a buyer’s willingness to host: big kitchen (92 %), large family room (92 %), large dining room (86 %), guest bathroom (87 %), large outdoor space (76 %), guest bedroom (73 %), and double oven (61 %). Senior economist Joel Berner told FOX Business that younger buyers’ focus on Thanksgiving hosting underscores the resilience of U.S. home demand. He added that affordability—not apathy—is keeping young buyers out of the market, and that falling mortgage rates should spur sales as more Americans look to own homes suitable for holiday gatherings.
