Irvine weighs stricter rules for warehouse construction projects

Irvine Considers Tougher Rules or Ban on Large Industrial Warehouses.

I
rvine, California is considering stricter regulations or a complete ban on large industrial warehouses. The city is reviewing a proposal from IRA Capital to build 540,000 square feet of warehouses in the Von Karman Corporate Center, but Mayor Larry Agran has expressed doubts about accommodating such massive projects. He believes they are "out of scale" and suggests prohibiting them altogether.

Agran and Councilwoman Kathleen Treseder have co-authored a memo calling for enhanced warehouse regulations. The City Council voted 4-2 to ask the city manager to come up with new regulations, which will be considered next month. This is not the first time Agran and Treseder have taken a stand against Irvine's warehouse development; they previously voted in favor of regulations that would limit warehouse expansion.

California has recently enacted legislation to restrict where distribution centers can be built, citing concerns about air pollution and traffic. However, critics argue that these new rules will harm trade and jobs. IRA Capital, the company behind the proposed Von Karman Corporate Center project, is also involved in another development plan for two warehouses containing 541,344 square feet.
