Lisa Cook Secures Interim Victory in Trump Lawsuit

Supreme Court delays decision on president’s attempt to remove Cook until January, in unsigned order.

O
n Oct. 1, the Supreme Court postponed its ruling on President Donald Trump’s bid to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook, keeping her on the Board through at least January 2026 while her lawsuit proceeds.

Trump announced on Aug. 25 his intent to fire Cook, citing alleged mortgage‑fraud claims from 2021 that predated her 2022 appointment. Cook, never charged or convicted, denied the allegations and sued, arguing the president lacked lawful grounds for termination. On Sept. 9, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb granted a stay, allowing her to remain in office pending the case.

The matter escalated to the Supreme Court, prompting a letter from former Treasury secretaries and Fed officials warning that immediate removal could jeopardize central bank independence. The court’s order preserves Cook’s position until the next hearing, scheduled for January 2026, when oral arguments will determine whether she may continue serving while litigation unfolds.

Cook began her term in May 2022; it expires in January 2038. Real Estate News has sought comment from Cook’s counsel and the Department of Justice.
