Andermatt, a picturesque Swiss Alps town, has long been a haven for international visitors drawn by its breathtaking scenery. The likes of Sean Connery and Elvis Presley have walked its streets, while Queen Victoria once stayed in the area. However, Andermatt's remote location hindered its growth until Egyptian property tycoon Samih Sawiris intervened.
Since discovering Andermatt from a helicopter in 2005, Sawiris has invested an estimated $2 billion into the town's largest-ever development project. He secured a rare exemption allowing foreigners to buy property here until 2040. Over nearly two decades, his vision for a world-class resort has taken shape, featuring the 119-room Chedi Andermatt hotel and Reuss, a new residential district.
Andermatt now boasts an impressive 180 sq km of ski pistes – more than Courchevel – offering diverse terrain from untracked descents to challenging off-piste routes. Atop Nätschen mountain, you might encounter skiers or gourmands heading to one of two Michelin-starred restaurants at Gütsch. Despite the town's transformation, its old quarter retains a rustic charm, blending traditional Swiss and international influences.
With over a third of new homes in Reuss owned by non-Swiss residents, Andermatt is an authentic yet cosmopolitan destination – for now.
