el Gibson is rebuilding his Malibu mansion after it was destroyed in the California wildfires earlier this year. The 69-year-old actor purchased the hilltop home for $US11.5 million in 2008 and had previously listed it for sale twice, most recently in 2019 for $US14.5 million.
Gibson expressed frustration with California Governor Gavin Newsom's handling of the wildfires during an appearance on Joe Rogan's podcast. He claimed that Newsom had promised to take care of the forest but failed to do so.
The Oscar-winner was not home when the fires broke out and arrived back at his dwelling to find it had burned to the ground. "I have never seen a place so perfectly burnt," he said, describing the scene as looking like Dresden after World War II.
Gibson has begun rebuilding the mansion, with photos showing that the rubble has been cleared away and a new foundation is being built. The original estate boasted soaring wood-beamed ceilings, wood floors, and stone archways, offering 6,578 square feet of living space.
The actor noted that he lost irreplaceable personal items in the fire, including photographs, files, and clothing. However, he tried to find humor in the situation, saying "at least I haven’t got any of those pesky plumbing problems anymore."
Gibson expressed gratitude that his loved ones were safe during the wildfires, which claimed 30 lives. He was one of dozens of celebrities who lost their homes in the disaster.
Photos obtained by Realtor show that Gibson is planning to build a structure similar to the original property, with a new foundation and revived landscaping. The project suggests that the actor is committed to rebuilding his home and moving forward from the devastating loss.
