he LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance honored Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices agent Melissa Young with its Drew Griffin Beacon of Light Award, recognizing her exceptional real‑estate practice and dedication to LGBTQ+ causes. The award commemorates the late PFLAG Pacific Northwest Regional Director Drew Griffin, a founding member of the Alliance’s steering committee.
Young earned the accolade through her work in Pennsylvania, partnering with the Pittsburgh Association of REALTORS® and the Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS®. As the founder of the Alliance’s Pittsburgh chapter, she spearheaded a campaign that secured both associations’ endorsement of the Alliance’s Article 10 Rule—an ordinance that bars local Realtor political action committees from backing candidates who discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. She also championed the Pennsylvania Fairness Act, ensuring protections for LGBTQ+ individuals in employment, housing, and public accommodations.
“I’m humbled to receive this honor,” Young said. “The board in Pittsburgh and Alliance members across Pennsylvania invested time, effort, and insight to broaden perspectives. My mother’s long‑standing advocacy taught me the power of local engagement.”
Alliance President Tommie Wehrle praised Young’s leadership: “Melissa exemplifies what local advocacy can achieve. Her Pittsburgh team modeled the approach for others, dedicating countless hours to meetings and presentations. Their persistence led the Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS® to adopt Article 10 and support the Commonwealth’s LGBTQ+ initiatives.”
