Midwestern Housing Markets Attract Gen Z Buyers with Lower Prices

Midwest metros lead affordability for young homeowners.

T
he Midwest is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for young professionals and homeowners, thanks to its relatively low housing costs. In fact, seven out of the top 10 most accessible metros for young homeowners are located in the region, according to a recent analysis by ConsumerAffairs.

Cities like Omaha, Nebraska; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Des Moines, Iowa; Wichita, Kansas; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Minneapolis, Minnesota have high rates of homeownership among those under 35. Median home prices in these cities range from $200,000 to $275,000, significantly lower than the national median of over $400,000.

This affordability gap can result in monthly housing costs that are 30% to 50% lower, even before factoring in lower property taxes and insurance. As a result, many Gen Z buyers are leaving higher-cost areas for more affordable options in the Midwest.

Realtor.com analysis shows that suburban ZIP codes in the region are gaining popularity, driven by buyers seeking lifestyle appeal, relative affordability, and access to economic hubs. Three of the 10 hottest ZIP codes are located in Ballwin, Missouri; Strongsville, Ohio; and Bexley, Ohio, which offer a mix of space, job opportunities, and value.

While home prices in the Midwest are rising, the region remains the most affordable homebuying destination in the country, according to Redfin. Cities like Detroit and Cleveland have median home prices that are roughly half of the national figure, making them attractive options for Gen Z buyers who want to build wealth without breaking the bank.
