42-year-old man, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was behind the deadly New Year's Day attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Before the incident, Jabbar had worked as a real estate agent in Texas, where he founded Blue Meadow Properties, a firm with multiple locations across the state. His real estate license was activated in 2019 and expired in February 2023.
Jabbar's professional background included writing blogs on property management and evictions for his company's website. He also claimed to be a member of several realtor associations, including the Texas Realtors association and the Houston Association of Realtors. However, after the attack, HAR stated that they had no information about Jabbar or his firm.
Jabbar was a Beaumont native and military veteran who lived in Fresno with his wife until their divorce in 2022. He lost his home due to foreclosure and accumulated significant debt, including $27,000 in past-due mortgage payments and $16,000 in credit card debt. His ex-wife alleged that Jabbar's spending habits contributed to the couple's financial woes.
In the months leading up to the attack, Jabbar told his landlord that he was relocating to New Orleans, but she had no knowledge of his occupation or activities. Investigators believe Jabbar rented a truck used in the attack on December 30 and posted videos online indicating a desire to kill. A flag bearing the logo of the Islamic State was found attached to the truck, which sped through crowds on Bourbon Street before opening fire, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens more.
