cross the United States, GOBankingRates has identified the most affluent small towns in every state, with New York’s top spot set to unsettle Westchester residents. The analysis focused on communities with 500–1,500 households, comparing property values and median incomes. Muttontown, a Long Island enclave in Nassau County, emerged as the wealthiest, boasting a median household income of $247,589 and an average home price of $2.21 million. The town, home to 3,496 people—including Grammy‑winner Alicia Keys and former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington—features the exclusive Muttontown Club, complete with golf, tennis, and a pool.
A prior GOBankingRates survey had named Scarsdale, a Westchester suburb, as the richest in the country, but its population exceeds 1,500 households, so it was omitted from this small‑town ranking. In Connecticut, Newtown claims the title, with homes averaging $661,000 and a median income of $161,000. New Jersey’s top small town is Glen Ridge, where the median income hits $248,000 and homes average $1.1 million. California’s richest small town is Palos Verdes Estates, south of Los Angeles.
