.S. holiday travel is set to hit record highs this Thanksgiving. The American Automobile Association projects 81.8 million people will drive at least 50 miles from home between Tuesday, Nov. 25, and Monday, Dec. 1, 2025—a 2 % rise (about 1.6 million more travelers) that surpasses previous highs, reflecting consumer confidence.
The rush eclipses other peak periods such as Memorial Day and Independence Day, as families head to reunions, resorts, and overseas destinations. Bookings favor Florida for theme parks and cruise ports, while travelers target Europe, the Caribbean, and Australia. Early AAA data show airfares on peak days are 4 % year‑over‑year, and hotel occupancy in tourist markets is 90 %.
“Thanksgiving travel numbers are impressive because the holiday has become synonymous with heading out of town to spend time with loved ones,” said Stacey Barber, AAA Travel VP. “People are willing to brave crowds and make last‑minute adjustments to create lasting memories.”
Airports and highways will face congestion, with TSA screening projected to exceed 3 million passengers per day on Wednesday and Sunday, reflecting pent‑up demand.
Analysts predict continued holiday travel growth, boosting airlines, hotels, and rental‑car firms.
