T
he Rhode Island Attorney General's Office has accused a real estate broker and his associates of swindling a Providence family out of their home through a "foreclosure rescue" scheme. Kyle Seyboth, owner of The Seyboth Team Real Estate in Seekonk, Mass., allegedly used tactics known as repurchase and refinance scams to deceive the homeowners.
According to prosecutors, Seyboth's associates would find properties on the brink of foreclosure and provide homeowners with misleading information about foreclosures and unfair offers to prevent foreclosure. A complaint filed in Providence Superior Court names several of Seyboth's businesses and associates as defendants.
The alleged scheme targeted Jean Marie Delva and her daughter, who had defaulted on their mortgage and owed around $62,000. An associate approached them outside their home, offering a plan that would allow them to keep their property. However, the documents they signed actually transferred ownership of the home to Seyboth's company for $100,000.
Prosecutors are seeking civil penalties and injunctive relief, including voiding the sale and returning the home to its original owners. The case is due back in court on December 6.
