n a stunning reversal, the Massachusetts town of Wellesley has catapulted to the top of the state's economic growth chart, leaving Worcester in its wake. This picturesque suburb, nestled just 15 miles west of Boston, boasts an average household income of over $110,000 and a median home price of $1.97 million.

Wellesley's ascent to boomtown status is no overnight phenomenon. The town has been cultivating affluence since the late 19th century, when it introduced its first newspaper, bank, and telephone service as its population swelled. By the early 20th century, Wellesley had already established itself as one of Greater Boston's premier suburban enclaves.

The key to Wellesley's success lies in its exceptional public school system, consistently ranked among the top 10 in Massachusetts. Families flock to the town for its educational excellence and proximity to elite private schools. The presence of Wellesley College, a globally recognized institution that has produced trailblazers across politics, media, finance, and science, also contributes significantly to the town's allure.

Wellesley's economic boom is reflected in its population growth – up 3.4% since 2014 – as well as housing demand, which has seen occupied units rise by 4% and owner-occupied homes increase by 6.1%. The per-capita income has skyrocketed by 35.8%, with residents enjoying a minimum of $111,690.

The town's character remains largely unchanged since the early 20th century, with its quaint atmosphere, fine old trees, and handsome buildings still evoking a sense of elegance and refinement. As one article from 1906 noted, "Fine old trees line the roads; handsome buildings have been erected for the public schools; even the railroad stations are objects of beauty … Wellesley, a residential village with no manufacturing, has long been noted for its pure water and invigorating air."
