n this Thanksgiving edition of "South Florida by the numbers," we highlight remarkable acts of kindness from some of the region's most influential figures. Despite Miami's competitive business scene, many power players are giving back to their community in meaningful ways.
$156 million: Citadel CEO Ken Griffin has donated to various South Florida causes since relocating his financial empire to Miami in 2022. This includes $50 million each to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Baptist Health South Florida, as well as $25 million to Nicklaus Children's Hospital and a recent $10 million donation to the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
$10 million: Related Group Chairman Jorge Pérez donated this amount to the Miami Foundation through the sale of his penthouse at One Ocean South Beach. This is not his first charitable act, as he previously donated the proceeds from selling his Coconut Grove estate to the same organization.
$122 million: A collection of four La Gorce Island waterfront homes in Miami Beach was sold for this total amount, with most going to charity. The Dr. M. Lee Pearce Foundation has supported various organizations, including the University of Miami and the New World Symphony.
$5.6 million: 450 photographs owned by real estate mogul Martin Margulies were auctioned off this year, with proceeds benefiting his foundation that supports food security and aid for marginalized groups.
$110 million: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos donated this amount to 40 U.S. charities, including $5 million to the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, the largest gift in its history. The funds will provide stable housing and critical services for those experiencing homelessness.
