South Shore Neighborhood Sees Record-Breaking Home Sale for $1.44 Million

A gold-flaked gate and bespoke craftsmanship helped propel this 1926 Italianate-style home to a record $1.44 million sale.

A
stunning Italianate-style home on Chicago's South Shore has shattered records with its $1.44 million sale, marking a new benchmark for Jackson Park Highlands. The 1926 property, situated on a 10,000-square-foot lot at 6835 South Bennett Avenue, sold to an undisclosed buyer for $291 per square foot, outpacing the previous record by $500,000. Zachary Redden of Redden & McDaniel represented the buyer.

The 5,000-square-foot residence boasts four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and two half-baths, with a primary suite featuring heated floors, a clawfoot bathtub, and high-end shower amenities. The kitchen is equipped with double ovens, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and LED-lit cabinetry. French doors lead to a spacious front porch, while LaCantina doors access a limestone patio.

As a landmark district, Jackson Park Highlands imposes strict renovation standards, which contributed to the home's record-breaking value, according to Jay Butts of Coldwell Banker, who represented the sellers. "You can't just use any materials," he said, highlighting the importance of quality craftsmanship in maintaining the neighborhood's character.

The sale comes as concerns about rising property values and gentrification continue to grow in South Shore. A recent advisory referendum saw 89% of voters support measures to prevent displacement due to rapid real estate development. The sale highlights both the neighborhood's growing appeal and the pressures of rapid growth, with the home selling for 87% of its $1.65 million asking price on December 6.
