T
he Chicago Fire is moving forward with plans to build a 25,000-seat soccer stadium at Related Midwest's Near South Side megadevelopment, The 78. A concept for the stadium was recently presented privately to Mayor Brandon Johnson and other city officials by the developer and the team. While no deal has been finalized, sources indicate that discussions are progressing with the possibility of Fire owner Joe Mansueto purchasing between 7 and 10 acres at The 78.
A dedicated soccer stadium is becoming increasingly urgent for the Fire due to frustration with sharing Soldier Field with the Chicago Bears. The team's lease at Soldier Field expires this month, and they're actively exploring alternatives, with Related's South Loop site emerging as a top contender alongside Lincoln Yards. A soccer stadium would enable the Fire to control its schedule, create a more intimate fan experience, and host various events throughout the year.
However, local leaders have raised concerns about how the project could impact traffic, pedestrian movement, and the surrounding neighborhood. Further approvals from city officials are required for the project to move forward.
