TikTok's "Cold Room" Challenge: How to Create a Chilling Oasis at Home

Cold rooms: Spacious, quiet spaces in sorority/fraternity houses with bunk beds for sleeping.

C
old rooms have taken TikTok by storm, but what exactly are they? These spacious, quiet areas in sorority and fraternity houses are designed to foster a sense of community among members, who typically sleep together in rows of bunk beds. While individual rooms are available for studying and socializing, sleeping in cold rooms is a long-standing tradition.

Inspired by sleeping porches popular in the early 1900s, today's cold rooms are sparsely decorated with minimal furniture and blackout curtains or shades to block out light. The air conditioning runs continuously at a chilly temperature of around 65 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

For many students, cold rooms have become a go-to spot for quick naps between classes or assignments. Sleep coach Elina Winnel explains that short naps can boost alertness, mood, and performance, while longer naps can aid memory consolidation and physical recovery.

The cooler temperatures in cold rooms also make it easier to fall asleep by supporting the body's natural thermoregulation and circadian rhythms. According to Winnel, most people sleep best in environments between 60 to 68 degrees, which helps maintain a drop in core temperature during sleep.

Darkness is also essential for good sleep, as light can filter through eyelids and lead to awakenings. Blackout curtains or shades help eliminate light disturbances, creating optimal conditions for deeper rest. To create your own cold room at home, try clearing clutter, adjusting the thermostat to around 60-67 degrees, using a fan, installing blackout curtains, limiting electronics, and choosing breathable bedding and pajamas.

By incorporating these tips, you can hack the cold-room vibe in your own home and improve the quality of your sleep.
