A
recent Bankrate survey reveals a shift in Americans' long-term investment preferences, with the stock market now favored over real estate for money that won't be needed for at least 10 years. The survey found that 27% of respondents chose stocks as their top investment, up from 26% in 2022, while real estate fell to 24%, down from 29% in 2022.
The top long-term investment choices among Americans are:
* Stock market: 27%
* Real estate: 24%
* Cash investments (savings, CDs): 21%
* Gold and other precious metals: 9%
* Bitcoin/cryptocurrency: 6%
* Bonds: 6%
* Other investments: 7%
The shift away from real estate is attributed to elevated mortgage rates and rising home prices, making it a less accessible option for many investors. Despite strong market performance, some Americans still hesitate to invest in stocks due to concerns about volatility (34%) and intimidation (21%).
Younger generations are more open to investing in cryptocurrency, but most Americans remain uncomfortable with the idea. The survey found that 78% of Americans said they are not comfortable investing in cryptocurrency.
Investment preferences vary by income and education levels, with higher-income households and college graduates more likely to prefer stocks. Experts say the survey reflects a growing confidence in the stock market, but volatility remains a major concern.
The Bankrate 2025 Long-Term Investment Survey polled 1,033 American adults between January 17-19, 2025.
