Funds advised by Bregal Unternehmerkapital have reached an agreement to acquire a majority stake in MDT technologies. MDT technologies is a European provider in the building automation sector. The seller of the shares is the IK VIII Fund, advised by IK Partners. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The completion of the transaction is subject to the usual regulatory approvals.

MDT technologies was founded in 1984 and is based in Engelskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The company is a significant manufacturer of intelligent components for building automation, based on the KNX standard. The product portfolio includes both wired and wireless KNX products, high-quality design sensors, and cloud-based management solutions. These products enable the intelligent control and automation of functions such as heating, ventilation, and lighting in residential and commercial buildings. MDT currently employs approximately 250 people and is steadily expanding its presence in Europe, India, and the Middle East.

Development and Expansion since 2020

Since partnering with IK in March 2020, MDT has expanded its engineering expertise and developed into a leading European provider of KNX-based solutions for building automation. The company's production capacity has more than doubled, and its product portfolio has expanded to around 600 actuators, sensors, and system devices, which improve the comfort and energy efficiency of buildings. MDT has also extended its international market presence by establishing its own sales, marketing, and technical support structures. The company has evolved from a founder-led structure into a professionally organised entity with full C-level management and strengthened leadership positions in Research & Development, Operations, and Finance.

In parallel, MDT invested in a new, highly modern company headquarters in Engelskirchen, which integrates automated manufacturing. This led to the creation of a modern and scalable production platform with expanded manufacturing capacities, forming a basis for future growth. Currently, over 95 per cent of products are manufactured in-house. This strengthens the company's reputation for quality, reliability, and high product availability, while simultaneously creating the operational foundations for further international expansion.

Strategic Enhancements and Sustainability

MDT has expanded its technological expertise and product offering through the strategic acquisitions of Tense, Tapko, and Apricum. These steps served to broaden design know-how, strengthen software competence in the KNX sector, and expand international presence. Progress has also been made in the area of sustainability. The company has defined validated climate targets, sources 95 per cent of its electricity demand from renewable energy sources, and has conducted a comprehensive assessment according to the EU taxonomy.

  • Continuous further development of the product and software portfolio.
  • Complementary acquisitions to strengthen market position.
  • Support with internationalisation beyond the DACH region.

Roger Karner, CEO of MDT technologies, acknowledged the previous collaboration in this context and emphasised the company's development from a German specialist to an actor with European reach. Mirko Jablonsky, Partner at IK Partners, highlighted the investments in innovation, international expansion, operational excellence, and sustainability that MDT has made in recent years. Felix Werdin, Partner at BU Bregal Unternehmerkapital, expressed conviction in MDT's leading market position and growth opportunities and looks forward to supporting further internationalisation as well as product, technology, and competence investments.
