Capital Dynamics, a global independent private assets asset manager, has acquired a shovel-ready Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Knockanure, County Kerry, Ireland. The project has a secured grid connection capacity of 170 MW and is connected to the adjacent 110 kV substation in Knockanure. This acquisition marks Capital Dynamics' first investment in the Republic of Ireland and expands its portfolio of LDES projects in the Irish electricity market.

The acquired system is among the first projects in the Republic of Ireland to be officially classified by EirGrid as Long Duration Energy Storage Systems (LDES). Following the grant of planning permission in October 2025, procurement and implementation planning has already begun. LDES projects are essential for the country's energy security and grid flexibility due to the high and continuously increasing share of renewable energies in national electricity generation. The grid is already experiencing increasing curtailment, making additional flexibility indispensable.

Importance of BESS Infrastructure

BESS infrastructure makes a significant contribution to stabilising the electricity grid. It is capable of absorbing surplus electrical energy when generation exceeds demand, and releasing this energy again during periods of increased system need. This directly supports the local economy and community. Barney Coles, Senior Managing Director and Co-Head of Clean Energy at Capital Dynamics, highlighted its importance. He stated that, given the increasing electricity generation from renewable sources, BESS projects represent a fast and efficient way to support local businesses and communities in strengthening energy security and increasing grid stability.

The Republic of Ireland is considered one of Europe's most attractive storage markets. This is due to a combination of a high and continuously increasing share of renewable electricity generation with a clear political commitment to decarbonising the electricity grid. These factors lead to a structural demand for BESS solutions. Capital Dynamics sees itself as an actor that will support the expansion of the country's low-carbon energy system.

The project was sold by a group of private shareholders to Capital Dynamics. Capital Dynamics was advised legally by Pinsent Masons, technically by Afry, and financially by Mazars on the transaction. This acquisition underscores the strategic interest in sustainable energy infrastructures and the expansion of engagement in European markets.
