MEAG and ENERCON have launched a specialised financing platform that offers institutional investors, including Munich Re, access to investments in wind energy projects. This is being done through the newly established ENERCON Finance Solutions sub-fund, domiciled in Luxembourg. The fund focuses on providing subordinated debt for wind energy ventures in the German-speaking region and aims to offer investors diversified access to the renewable energy sector.
ENERCON, a leading European wind energy company with a strong presence in the German-speaking market, works alongside large wind farms with numerous smaller and medium-sized project developers, municipalities, and private investors. These players use traditional bank financing but often have limited equity for implementing additional projects. The new platform addresses precisely this financing gap by providing junior financing.
The ENERCON Fund enables project developers to achieve a more efficient capital structure without having to relinquish ownership stakes or control over their projects. This is intended to promote the realisation of additional wind energy projects and the refinancing of existing facilities, thereby supporting the energy transition. At the same time, the structure offers MEAG investors the opportunity to invest in high-quality wind assets in the German-speaking market.
Platform Structure and Governance
The platform combines ENERCON's industrial expertise with the structure of a professional specialised fund. ENERCON identifies suitable financing opportunities within its client base and also participates in the fund as an investor itself. Independent investment review and ongoing portfolio management are carried out by Mount Street based on detailed investment criteria developed in cooperation with MEAG.
Universal Investment Luxembourg acts as the regulated Alternative Investment Fund Manager and bears the regulatory responsibility for the fund. Mount Street and BKN Capital supported the conception and implementation of the platform, while Linklaters provided legal advice for the transaction. This collaboration aims to ensure a scalable governance structure and an efficient investment process while maintaining high institutional standards.
Isil Tanriverdi Vermissen, Head of Infrastructure Debt Transactions at MEAG, stated that the fund offers investors access to an attractive and previously underserved market segment. She emphasised that the platform enables investments in valuable wind energy projects that institutional investors have previously had only limited access to in this form. Michael Kittle, Head of Illiquid Assets Debt at MEAG, underscored the value of strategic partnerships between industry and institutional investors. Antonia Jobke, Managing Director of MEAG, highlighted that a tailor-made debt solution for the German-speaking wind energy market had been developed together with ENERCON. Dr. Michael Jaxy, CFO of ENERCON, said that the ENERCON Finance Solutions Fund expands the range of solutions with an additional financing component for clients, creating new opportunities for the realisation of wind energy projects.
