BESS Perlen AG, a newly established joint venture between Perlen Industrieholding AG and the Valyou Investment Foundation, is making a significant investment in a battery storage system. This system from ADS-TEC Energy will have a capacity of 10 MW and a storage capacity of 20 MWh. The facility is being built on the premises of Perlen Papier AG, a subsidiary of Perlen Industrieholding AG, and represents a strategic step to expand the energy infrastructure at the Perlen industrial site.
The overall project management for this undertaking is handled by the Swiss wattss Group. The commissioning of the battery storage system is scheduled for the end of 2026. This addition will create the possibility to flexibly store electricity and market it purposefully on the electricity markets. Initially, participation in the balancing energy markets is planned; in the long term, the storage unit will also be used for day-ahead and intraday trading.
Strategic Importance and Partnerships
Dr. Florian Geiger, CEO of Perlen Industrieholding AG and Perlen Papier AG, emphasises the strategic importance of the project. He stated that the battery storage system will further develop the industrial area in Perlen into a modern energy hub and open up new value creation potential. Energy is thus establishing itself as an additional economic pillar of the site.
The establishment of BESS Perlen AG by Perlen Industrieholding AG and the Valyou Investment Foundation serves the long-term goal of investing in and securing the operation of energy storage infrastructure. Yonten Wagma, Managing Director of the Valyou Investment Foundation, highlighted that this project exemplarily demonstrates how the combination of institutional capital, attractive industrial sites, and innovative energy technologies leads to the creation of sustainable and attractive infrastructure assets.
Technology and Expertise
ADS-TEC Energy is supplying the battery storage system and brings over 15 years of experience in the development of battery storage, power electronics, and energy management systems. Michael Rudloff, COO of ADS-TEC Energy, underscored that battery storage creates economic flexibility by enabling companies to store electricity purposefully, market it intelligently, and simultaneously make an important contribution to a stable energy system. He added that their many years of experience underpin their knowledge of the requirements for industrial operation of such facilities.
The wattss Group is responsible for comprehensive project management, ranging from project development and technical integration to the energy-economic marketing of the storage unit. Marco Rüegg, CEO of the wattss Group, noted that large-scale storage projects like the one in Perlen demonstrate the potential in linking industry and the energy market. He emphasised the necessity of considering technology, industrial location, financing, and marketing integrally from the outset. The project in Perlen represents another step towards an integrated energy hub that combines industrial infrastructure with the demands and opportunities of modern electricity markets.
