MEAG, as asset manager for Munich Re, has provided significant financing for Wyre on behalf of Munich Re and other institutional investors. The funds provided, which amount to a mid-three-digit Euro sum, position the investors managed by MEAG as key institutional financing partners for Wyre.

Wyre, founded in 2023 as a joint venture between Telenet and Fluvius, consolidates the fixed-line infrastructure of both partners in Flanders and Brussels. The company operates the leading passive broadband infrastructure there and holds a strong market position. Wyre is forecast to own and operate around 60 percent of the fibre-optic network in Belgium.

Financing structure and purpose

The current financing is primarily aimed at establishing an independent, secured financing platform for Wyre. The incoming capital serves several purposes. A significant portion will be used to repay existing shareholder loans. Furthermore, the funds will be invested in financing the company's long-term fibre-optic expansion programme. Wyre aims to extend its fibre-optic network to several million households by the early 2030s, thereby supporting Belgium's digital transformation.

Wyre's revenue base is secured by long-term wholesale agreements with leading telecommunications providers in Belgium, including Telenet and Orange Belgium. These contractual commitments create a stable foundation for predictable cash flows and promote the continuous development of the platform. The investment in Wyre aligns with MEAG's strategy to invest in high-quality core infrastructure assets that generate stable and inflation-resilient returns for its investors.

Strategic importance

Michael Kittle, Head of Infrastructure Debt at MEAG, commented on the importance of this transaction. He emphasised that Wyre plays a crucial role in Belgium's digital infrastructure and possesses a strong market position as well as contractually secured long-term revenues. This investment, he stated, is proof of MEAG's disciplined approach to investing capital in infrastructure companies that enable stable long-term returns. Işıl Tanrıverdi Versmissen, Head of Infrastructure Debt Transactions at MEAG, highlighted that the transaction underscores MEAG's willingness to provide substantial capital in early stages of the investment cycle to promote the expansion of essential infrastructure while creating long-term value for investors.
