The city council of Miami Gardens in the US state of Florida has unanimously approved a long-term lease for a municipal site. The agreement paves the way for the construction of a new 127-room hotel close to the renowned Hard Rock Stadium.

The design provides for the construction of the project under the name Beckham Hotel Miami Gardens, along with an associated multi-storey car park, on a section of an approximately 3.5-acre site at 18600 Northwest 25th Avenue. An affiliation with a specific hotel brand has not yet been announced.

Combination with new cultural centre and 50-year lease

The project forms part of a major urban development initiative by the municipality. Alongside the planned hotel, a new municipal cultural centre featuring a theatre hall with around 1,200 seats is to be built on the same site. Municipal documents also indicate that a second hotel is envisaged for the site at a later stage.

The city's contractual partners are the companies P3 Markets and Beckham Hospitality. The lease has a term of 50 years and stipulates that the developers will make rental payments totalling around $18.6 million to the city council over this period.

Developer, demographics and proximity to Hard Rock Stadium

The hotel project is led by Chicago-born entrepreneur Phillip L. Beckham III, who has no family relation to former professional footballer David Beckham. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Miami Gardens has a population of 116,115, of which 59 per cent belong to the African American community. Addressing the city council, Beckham stressed that his company deliberately invests in communities that reflect its own profile.

The future hotel site is situated just two miles from Hard Rock Stadium. Owned by billionaire Stephen Ross, the sports and entertainment venue serves as the home ground for the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Hurricanes college team. The venue regularly hosts major global events, including a Formula 1 race, the Miami Open tennis tournament, and the annual Orange Bowl college football game.
