On 8 November, the Day of Conversion Culture will take place nationwide for the fourth time. The initiative was launched in 2022 by the Federal Foundation of Baukultur to raise public awareness of resource-efficient, climate-compatible, and identity-creating building within existing structures, and to highlight its architectural and cultural value.
In the Bavarian capital, the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations is taking part in the campaign day. The municipal authority is organising guided tours of four selected properties across the city on this date. The programme includes two completed schemes as well as two projects currently under construction. These examples are intended to demonstrate how repurposing existing building fabric avoids complete demolition and creates measurable added value for urban development and climate protection.
Four conversion projects in the Munich city area
The scope of the projects presented extends across several city districts and reflects very different historical uses. Former commercial, military, and office spaces are being repurposed for new, future-proof uses as part of these conversions:
- —Fritz District in Neuperlach: Redesign of the former corporate headquarters of the Allianz insurance group.
- —CHARLIE - Sweet Living in Altperlach: Residential development on the site of a former research centre for chocolate creations.
- —Soyerhofstraße 17 in Untergiesing-Harlaching: Redesign of a property with a military past as barracks.
- —Am Loferfeld 58 in Lochhausen: Completed transformation of a former office building into a sheltered housing facility for women.
Schedule and organisational information for visitors
Two guided tours will be offered at each of the four project locations on the day of the event. To ensure an appropriate presentation of the technical construction aspects, group sizes are limited to a maximum of 30 people per time slot. Participation in the tours is free of charge, but requires prior registration.
Regarding local conditions, the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations points out that the tours of the Fritz District and the CHARLIE - Sweet Living project are not step-free accessible. Across all locations, interested visitors will gain direct insights into the structural and planning challenges associated with the ongoing use of complex existing buildings in the Munich area.
