Construction work for the new road maintenance depot in Völklingen, which began in November 2025, shows continuous progress. This construction project, a cooperation between Peter Gross Bau, the Saarland State Road Construction Agency, and LEG Service GmbH, aims to create an efficient site for regional road maintenance services. Completion is scheduled for December 2026.

The overall project comprises three main components: a vehicle hall, an administration building, and a separate grit storage hall. The vehicle hall, with a floor area of approximately 3,250 square metres, is the largest part of the building. Its construction uses prefabrication, with steel truss girders serving as the roof structure. This hall will be functionally supplemented by a workshop and a wash hall, comprehensively covering the operational requirements of the road maintenance service.

Building Structure and Area Distribution

The two-storey administration building occupies around 420 square metres of floor area. It houses modern office and social rooms and is equipped with all necessary building services. The exterior facade of the administration building will be constructed from precast wall panels. Internally, ceilings and interior walls were built using in-situ concrete. The grit storage hall, a standalone building, covers approximately 440 square metres of floor area. Its construction consists of an in-situ concrete structure with a timber framework and a facade that integrates timber cladding and polycarbonate panels. On the in-situ concrete floor slab, a mastic asphalt topping will be applied to meet specific storage requirements.

Sustainability Aspects

Sustainability considerations were taken into account during the planning and realisation of the Völklingen road maintenance depot. The construction project integrates various modern technologies for resource efficiency and environmental protection.

  • Photovoltaic system: A system with an output of around 100 kWp will be installed on the site.
  • Cistern: A 200 cubic metre cistern serves to supply the brine system and the washing areas.
  • Charging infrastructure: EV charging stations will be provided.

Markus Klein, Head of Building Construction and Precast Plant at Peter Gross Bau, stated that the new road maintenance depot will create an efficient and modern site for regional road maintenance services. He emphasised that the project combines high functional requirements with sustainable technical equipment and demonstrates Peter Gross Bau's expertise in implementing demanding building construction projects.
