owntown Houston is set to undergo a major transformation with the creation of Main Street Promenade, a $12 million project aimed at turning a seven-block stretch into a vibrant retail and dining destination. The initiative, led by Downtown Houston+, is scheduled to begin construction in May 2024, with completion expected just ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The promenade will feature an elevated street running alongside restaurants and shops, while maintaining access for Metro's Red Line trains and cross-street traffic. To encourage local businesses to participate, Downtown Houston+ is offering grants of up to $50,000 for outdoor seating and storefront updates.
"This project will create a unique environment that sets downtown apart," said Kris Larson, CEO of Downtown Houston+. "We want to shift the focus away from corporate offices and turn Main Street into a destination."
The effort aims to revitalize downtown Houston's economy, which has been impacted by declining office leasing. Native landscaping and iconic street markers are also planned to enhance the area's appeal.
