Amaravati Governed by Real Estate Mafia

APCC chief YS Sharmila Reddy objects to AP govt's plan to acquire 20,000 more acres for Amaravati.

PCC chief YS Sharmila Reddy has strongly opposed the Andhra Pradesh government’s latest plan to acquire an additional 20,000 acres for Amaravati. She demanded that the government first explain what became of the 54,000 acres already taken from farmers and state lands over the past decade.

In the first phase, 29,000 farmers surrendered 34,000 acres based on promises of development. Including government parcels, the total reached 54,000 acres, yet after 11 years the capital region remains largely undeveloped, covered in weeds with no major buildings, infrastructure or industry. Reddy questioned reports claiming only 700 acres remain and called for full disclosure on how the first‑phase lands were used, allotted or sold. She also asked why this information is absent from the CRDA website and why a White Paper has not been released.

Reddy rejected the second‑phase acquisition as unnecessary and unfair to farmers. She criticized the claim that 5,000 acres are needed for a new airport, noting that major airports such as Mumbai, Bhogapuram and Gannavaram operate on far less land; upgrading the existing airport would be cheaper and wiser. She also challenged the proposal to allocate 2,500 acres for a sports city, pointing out that Olympic stadiums are built on much smaller sites and that the plans appear to favor private interests over public benefit.

She called for an all‑party meeting, a comprehensive White Paper, and robust protection for farmers, insisting that Amaravati should represent the dignity of Andhra Pradesh, not a real‑estate venture.
