A
recent study by Atlas Van Lines found Arkansas to be the most popular destination for Americans moving in 2024. The state's appeal can be attributed to job opportunities, proximity to friends and family, and affordability. According to the Migration Patterns Study, a relatively even number of people are moving into and out of states this year, marking the highest number of "balanced" states in five years.
The study also revealed that 2024 saw the lowest number of outbound states in over five years, suggesting many people may not be moving at all. Atlas Van Lines attributes this trend to the "lock-in effect," where low-interest mortgages keep homeowners in their homes and drive up housing prices.
Rhode Island came in second as a top inbound state, followed by North Carolina, Washington D.C., Idaho, Tennessee, Maine, Connecticut, Washington state, and Alaska. The study calculates the highest percentage of inbound and outbound moves based on shipments multiplied by 0.55.
Increasing return-to-office mandates from Fortune 500 companies like Amazon, Walmart, and CVS coincide with the top inbound states of Arkansas, Rhode Island, and Washington. Atlas COO Ryan McConnell notes that corporate giants have invested heavily in Arkansas, driving relocation to the state due to its affordability, low crime rates, and green spaces.
Louisiana topped the list of outbound states, with Americans citing a difficult job market and increased costs of living. The top outbound states also include California, Illinois, South Dakota, and New York. Atlas Van Lines notes that three of the most populous and expensive states – California, Illinois, and New York – have remained on the outbound list for over five years.
A survey by Atlas in August 2024 found that 32% of movers relocated for a new job, while 25% moved to be closer to friends or family. The remaining 33% cited reasons such as climate/weather, safety, relationship changes, education, retirement, or health reasons.
