T&T is reversing its flexible work policy, requiring most employees to return to the office full-time starting in January. The change will initially affect Technology Services workers and roll out across job sites by March. As one of the nation's largest private employers with 150,000 employees, AT&T joins a growing list of companies scaling back remote work policies introduced during the pandemic.
Amazon recently implemented a similar policy, effective January 2, although some cities are exempt due to office space constraints. AT&T emphasized that its return-to-office policies will vary by team and location, with no universal policy applying to all employees. This move represents a continuation of gradual changes made since last year, when managers were required to work from the office at least three days a week.
The shift could influence other companies to follow suit, potentially boosting commercial real estate in major urban centers. In Dallas, where AT&T is headquartered, the office vacancy rate stands at 26%. However, the region's office return rate outpaces the nation, with over 90% of employees returning to work in person in the city's Central Business District and Uptown neighborhoods.
