Vacant NYC Landmark, Former Limelight Club Site, Listed for Sale and Rent

Vacant Manhattan church, once a club kids hotspot, now sports for-sale and for-lease signs.

A
historic New York City church, once a hub for nightlife and counterculture, is now up for sale or lease. The Church of the Holy Communion, a striking Gothic Revival building at 20th Street and Sixth Avenue, has been transformed over the years into various venues, including a nightclub, shopping space, gym, and pop-ups.

The church's most infamous era was as the Limelight, a groundbreaking nightclub that hosted Andy Warhol's opening night in 1983. The club became a hotspot for rave culture, but its debauched atmosphere led to repeated crackdowns by the city and ultimately its closure in 2010. After the Limelight's demise, the church underwent several unsuccessful transformations, including a boutique shopping destination and a nightclub-themed gym.

Today, only two businesses occupy parts of the property: Limelight Pizza NYC and Jue Lan Club, a dim sum restaurant. Employees at both establishments said they are separately operated from the main sanctuary, which is currently vacant. City records indicate that the entire parcel is owned by Mansion Realty LLC, connected to Ben Ashkenazy's real estate firm.

Despite flashy advertisements appearing outside the church, no public listings for the property have materialized. A representative for the company confirmed ownership but declined to comment on potential sale or lease details. The church's future remains uncertain as it awaits a new occupant or buyer.
