Austin Developer Nate Paul Sentenced to 10-Day Jail Term

Nate Paul faces separate civil case in addition to federal financial crimes charges.

N
ate Paul, an Austin real estate developer, has been ordered to serve a 10-day jail sentence for contempt of court. State District Judge Jan Soifer made this decision after finding Paul had continuously refused to comply with a court order related to a civil case in which he's accused of defrauding a nonprofit. The original sentence was delayed while Paul appealed the ruling, but U.S. District Judge David Allan Ezra cleared the way for Soifer to enforce the sentence.

Paul is also facing federal charges and has been indicted on eight counts of financial crimes. His trial is scheduled to begin early next year. A recent court hearing revealed that a former employee had witnessed Paul altering bank documents to obtain a real estate loan, which Paul's attorneys argue should be inadmissible at trial due to flaws in the federal investigation.

Paul was also linked to last year's impeachment of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who was accused of accepting gifts and favors from the developer. Although Paxton was acquitted by the Texas Senate, the allegations against him were largely party-line votes.
