Behind the Facade: A Family Home Hiding Major Renovation Needs

Behind its charming facade, a New Jersey colonial manor conceals a dark and sinister truth.

T
he charming New Jersey colonial-style manor at 400 Goffle Hill Road has been a hot commodity since listing for $649,000 two weeks ago. Deemed the quintessential haunted house, this sprawling 5,300-square-foot home is generating intense interest from buyers and investors alike. Keller Williams agent Alex Houser, tasked with selling the property, reports that his phone hasn't stopped ringing since listing it.

Built in 1889, the Hawthorne home boasts vintage charm with original stone fireplaces, hand-hewn wood beams, vaulted ceilings, and a stone foundation. However, years of neglect have taken their toll, leaving the property in disrepair. Houser describes it as a "diamond in the rough" that requires serious TLC to restore its former glory.

Despite the challenges, Houser believes the home's value will soar with proper renovation. He estimates the after-repair value to be over $1 million and notes that there's nothing else like this property in Hawthorne. The five-bedroom home features three-and-a-half bathrooms, a walkout office, and a double garage.

As an investor, Houser acknowledges that the property needs significant work, but he sees it as an opportunity for someone with vision to restore it to its former charm. "This house is begging for the right investor to come through, bring it back into the modern century, and turn this back into the gem that it really is," he said.

The property has now gone under contract, according to Houser, who believes that with the right owner, it can be transformed from a neglected relic into a stunning modern-age gem.
