Benihana Sells NYC Condo for Nearly $1M Loss

Teppanyaki chain's unit value severely impacted by market conditions.

A
one-bedroom, 1½-bathroom condo in Manhattan's Olympic Tower has sold for $1.77 million to an LLC named Science of Enlightenment. The buyer paid nearly $1 million less than the original purchase price of $2.6 million in 2015. Benihana, a teppanyaki chain with a flagship eatery nearby, had owned the unit since then.

The condo features floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning skyline views and is located near St. Patrick's Cathedral. The luxury tower was built by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in 1975 for Aristotle Onassis, who developed it as a haven for the global rich to buy without co-op board scrutiny. Past residents include Anne Hathaway and Raffaello Follieri.

The unit boasts a sleek layout with an open living/dining area, a separate bedroom wing, and custom-designed Italian mahogany closets. Design elements also include mirrored walls and curved wood built-ins, reminiscent of the 1980s. The buyer's identity remains unknown behind the LLC name.
