Biloxi native and prominent developer Joseph Canizaro passes away at 88

oseph C. Canizaro, a renowned Mississippi-born real estate developer and philanthropist, passed away at his Louisiana home on Friday. As one of the key figures behind New Orleans' modern skyline, Canizaro developed over 10 million square feet of commercial spaces, hotels, mixed-use developments, and more throughout his illustrious career spanning from 1966.

    A native of Biloxi, Mississippi, Canizaro played a pivotal role in shaping New Orleans' evolution during the 60s and beyond. Gayle Benson, owner of the Saints and Pelicans, praised Canizaro's lasting impact on the city: "His vision continues to be visible throughout the region, from the Riverfront to our suburbs... His great Catholic faith and commitment to charitable causes made our city a better place."

    Mississippi Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann also honored Canizaro, describing him as "a dedicated developer of Tradition" with "strong faith and significant business acumen." Canizaro's recent work included leading the $2 billion Tradition development in Harrison County, which spanned nearly 5,000 acres.

    As part of this project, Canizaro donated land for a nursing facility at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, doubling its nursing programs. He was also a major contributor to William Carey University, which launched a second campus in Tradition in 2009. Through his philanthropic efforts, Canizaro held leadership positions with organizations like Donum De Foundation and Committee for a Better New Orleans.
