OONE COUNTY — With just over a week left to apply, Boone County's senior real estate tax relief program is seeing a surge in applicants. The deadline for applications is October 1 at 5 p.m., and so far, over 6,000 residents have applied for the program.
The program was established after Proposition 1 passed in April, allowing eligible seniors to receive credit on their property taxes. Boone County Commissioner Janet Thompson notes that the application process has been smooth, with a steady stream of applicants since July 1.
Commissioner Kip Kendrick agrees, saying that while applications were slower earlier this month, they've picked up significantly over the past few days. Eligible residents will see any credit applied to their 2025 real estate tax statement if approved.
To be eligible, Boone County residents must be 62 or older and own their residence, with liability for property taxes on the property. Once approved, applicants shouldn't expect a freeze on their real estate taxes, as countywide reassessments occur every odd-numbered year.
These reassessments will drive increases in property evaluations, and seniors can expect to see the credit build up on their tax bill over time. Applications are available online or in person at the Boone County Collector's Office, with more information available on the county website.
